How to Verify Legitimate RSPS – Spot Real Servers vs Scams
Before you invest time or money in a RuneScape private server, verify it’s legitimate. Here’s how to check if an RSPS is real, and not a scam, clone, or short-lived cash grab.
Check the Website #
Official websites are usually professional and up to date.
What to look for:
- Clear server name and branding
- Working download links and Discord invite
- Recent news or updates (within the last few weeks or months)
- Contact information or support links
Red flags:
- Broken links, missing images, or “under construction” for months
- No Discord or community link
- Copy-paste content from other servers
- Generic or template-looking design with no real info
Verify the Discord #
Discord is where most RSPS communities live. A real server has an active, real community.
What to look for:
- Member count that matches the server’s claimed player base
- Recent messages in general chat
- Staff visible and responsive
- Rules, roles, and channels that look maintained
Red flags:
- Few members or mostly bots
- No recent activity
- Staff never respond to questions
- Suspicious or generic server name
Look for Reviews and Mentions #
Third-party validation matters. Legitimate servers get mentioned.
Where to check:
- Our server reviews – Hands-on reviews of real servers
- Our toplist – Curated list of servers we track
- Reddit (r/RSPS, r/2007scape) – Community discussions
- RSPS forums or Discord servers – Player recommendations
Red flags:
- No reviews, no mentions, no presence anywhere
- Only positive reviews from accounts that look fake
- Server claims to be “new” but has no history at all
Check How Long the Server Has Been Online #
Longevity is a strong signal. Servers that have been online for years are less likely to disappear overnight.
What to look for:
- “Established X years” or “Online since X” on the website
- Archive.org or old forum posts mentioning the server
- Our comparison tool – We rate longevity for reviewed servers
Red flags:
- Brand-new server (days or weeks old) with no prior presence
- Rebranded or “relaunched” with a new name and no explanation
Verify Payment and Donation Setup #
Legitimate servers use standard payment processors and clear terms.
What to look for:
- PayPal, Stripe, or other established processors
- Clear terms of service and refund policy
- Checkout on the official site, not via random Discord DMs
Red flags:
- Crypto-only, gift cards, or sketchy payment methods
- “Send money to this address” in DMs
- No terms, no refund policy, no clear process
See our payment safety guide for more on payment verification.
Check for Staff Transparency #
Real servers often have staff who engage with the community.
What to look for:
- Staff names or roles visible in Discord
- Owners or moderators answering questions
- Clear rules and enforcement
Red flags:
- Completely anonymous staff
- No real interaction, only automated messages
- Vague or missing information about who runs the server
Use Our Resources #
We maintain reviews, a toplist, and a comparison tool for servers we’ve verified. If a server appears there, it’s been checked for legitimacy, activity, and community health.
Quick verification checklist:
- Website looks professional and up to date
- Discord is active with real members
- Server appears in reviews, toplist, or community discussions
- Payment uses standard processors
- Server has been online for a meaningful time
If most of these check out, the server is likely legitimate. If several fail, proceed with caution. For more on avoiding bad servers, see our 5 red flags guide and exit scam guide.
